The second wave of Covid-19 infections has challenged not only our clients but also the staff of Empilweni (pictured). Children are struggling with overwhelming fear and shock in the presence of so much sickness and loss among their family members. One in three of our client families have suffered bereavement, often of the breadwinner. Inability to say goodbye to dying family members and restricted funeral rituals because of lockdown make it even more difficult for children to deal with the bereavement. There are just not enough hours in the day to provide the mental health support needed by the children and families that are coming to Empilweni. Our staff’s skills and own mental health are being stretched to the limit by the pandemic but they are determined to help their clients to come through this crisis and to achieve emotional wellbeing again
