I, Noncedo Nomahe, joined the staff of Empilweni as a mental health counsellor in 1996 when it was situated in Site C at the Nolungile Clinic. Empilweni was operating under great difficulties and challenges at that time: the staff were squashed in a small bungalow, and some had to work outside with their clients in the wind or hot sun. The premises lacked proper sanitation
I salute Empilweni staff for keeping their heads up and dedicating themselves to touch and change people’s lives. Empilweni has cared for and healed families and their children on a broad scale. If Empilweni had not been there many children and adolescents would be street kids now, others in prison, and some dead. Instead, today they are taxi men, or entrepreneurs, some have reached high positions, and others have gone overseas. As a parent, I too have gained parenting skills which enabled me to guide my children between right and wrong.
Empilweni has grown, as a child does, through many life challenges, and has now reached a mature age. Empilweni is blessed by good staff, who stand firm through thick and thin, with confidence and humble hearts. Let us not forget all those who worked behind the scenes like Professor Robertson, Sandy Prosalendis, and all the other Board members who have been the pillars of the organisation.
